Day 1: La Don Milani incontra l’Europa!

Day 1: A European Day at Don Milani

On November 25th, 2025, our school experienced an extraordinary day dedicated to friendship, cooperation, and European cultural exchange, warmly welcoming a group of 11 students and 3 teachers from Gesamtschule Ückendorf (Germany) as part of the eTwinning project “Glitter & Greetings Across Europe.”

From the moment they arrived, our German guests were overwhelmed by the warmth of the entire school community. Waiting for them at the entrance, together with the Principal and the Vice Principal, were secondary school students holding colorful welcome posters, while primary school pupils cheerfully waved Italian flags, a symbol of the pride with which our school welcomed friends from Germany. The atmosphere was joyful, festive, and full of excitement: amidst applause, smiles, and warm greetings, the whole school became a great celebration of friendship and cultural exchange, making our guests immediately feel like the protagonists of a special experience.

The Welcome Ceremony, conceived and hosted by the project coordinator, Mrs Nicolosi, was one of the most meaningful moments of the day. The event opened with welcoming speeches from the Principal and the Vice Principal, who highlighted the value of intercultural encounters and the importance of European projects in fostering students’ growth. This was followed by a captivating musical performance by the school orchestra, which helped create an inspiring and enthusiastic atmosphere.

One of the most significant moments of the morning was the online connection with the European partner schools involved in the eTwinning project. Thanks to this virtual meeting, the auditorium became a true window onto Europe: students and teachers from different countries shared greetings, messages of friendship, and delightful musical performances that captured everyone’s attention. Seeing and listening to the European partners live made the international dimension of the project tangible, allowing students to feel part of a large educational community that goes beyond geographical borders and unites different cultures, languages, and traditions. It was a moment that perfectly reflected the core values of eTwinning: cooperation, dialogue, inclusion, mutual respect, and European citizenship. The enthusiasm felt throughout the auditorium confirmed how valuable these exchanges are for the personal, cultural, and linguistic growth of all participants.

The morning continued with a series of performances carefully prepared by the secondary school students. Among the most appreciated moments were a dance performance to “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” a speech by the Baby Mayor, translated into German and English by some of our students, and an emotional singing and dancing performance to “Hallelujah.” The morning was further enriched by a greeting from the German guests, who addressed the school community and contributed to making this cultural exchange even more authentic. The grand finale of the Welcome Ceremony was set to the lively notes of “Jingle Bell Rock.” Italian and German students sang and danced together, turning the auditorium into a true explosion of joy. Amid applause, smiles, and shared enthusiasm, the entire school community took part in a moment of genuine celebration that perfectly embodied the spirit of friendship, cooperation, and unity among cultures that characterizes the eTwinning project.

At the end of the Welcome Ceremony, the guests took part in a guided tour of the school, which also included a visit to the kindergarten. The youngest children welcomed the German students with small handmade gifts: a simple yet meaningful gesture that represented the purest symbol of friendship. Afterwards, a shared snack featuring typical Sicilian specialities provided a valuable moment of conviviality. Through traditional flavors, conversations, laughter, and souvenir photos, Italian and German students had the opportunity to get to know one another better, forming friendships and naturally overcoming language barriers.

Finally, the workshop led by Mrs Arezzo engaged students in creating beautiful pop-up Christmas cards, a key activity of the eTwinning project. Creativity, cooperation, and the exchange of ideas resulted in original and colorful creations, providing tangible evidence of friendships built beyond national borders. For a brief moment, the workshop was enriched by the beautiful sound of Mr Maccarone’s cello, whose music made the atmosphere even more magical and evocative, offering participants a touching moment of emotion and sharing.
